Lions Club of Singapore Paterson First Immersion in T'boli Culture at Gunu Bong, South Cotabato
On October 5, 2024, the Lions Club of Singapore Paterson members took a remarkable journey into the heart of T'boli culture during their outreach at Sitio Saging, Poblacion T'boli, South Cotabato. After the first wave of their successful mission, the club headed straight to the serene village of Gunu Bong for a traditional lunch unlike any other.
The highlight of the afternoon was the hands-on experience of cooking the T'boli way—using bamboo as cooking vessels, a practice rooted deeply in their culture. The Lions Club members were guided through the process by the T'boli community, who graciously shared their culinary traditions, transforming the meal into an unforgettable cultural exchange. Bamboo, commonly used by the tribe for both cooking and eating, lent a distinct flavor and authenticity to the meal. The members took part in preparing the food and cooking it in bamboo, a true immersion in the age-old customs of the community people.
As the afternoon unfolded, the club members enjoyed the communal feast in true T'boli fashion—seated on the bamboo floor of the traditional Gunu Bong house. The simple yet warm setting allowed everyone to appreciate the richness of the tribe's culture, with colorful surroundings, vibrant attire, and the unique festive atmosphere that defines the T'boli way of life.
For many, this was their first time experiencing the vibrant traditions of the T'boli people, and the lunch became more than just a meal—it was a celebration of culture, unity, and shared human experience. The Lions Club members together with the volunteers from Holy Child Central Colleges, Inc., the LGU Lake Sebu and Tboli, left not only with full stomachs but with hearts filled with gratitude for the hospitality and cultural exchange they had been a part of that afternoon.
Special thanks go to Mayor Keo Dayle T. Tuan of Tboli, South Cotabato, and Ma’am Shine Perong for their warm hospitality and invaluable support in hosting the Lions Club and the volunteers. Their efforts helped create an enriching and memorable cultural experience for all people involved.
This memorable afternoon was a testament to the beauty of cultural immersion and the importance of understanding and celebrating the traditions of indigenous communities. At the same time, this afternoon fueled the club’s motivation to continue serving the community and prepare for another outreach activity in the days to come.
Truly, the Lions Club of Singapore Paterson has deepened its connection with the T'boli tribe, marking the beginning of a bond that goes beyond outreach. This experience has shown how sharing a meal, in its most traditional form, can build bridges between cultures and foster lasting friendships.
