Following their humanitarian outreach in Cebu, Lions Club of Singapore Paterson and Holy Child Central Colleges, Inc. (HCCCI) continued their engagement in the Philippines through a cultural visit to a local guitar shop on October 11, 2026. After working with partners to extend assistance to over 2,000 families and provide medical and mobility equipment to 13 hospitals across Cebu, the delegation took time to experience another dimension of the province through its musical heritage, local craftsmanship, and the Filipino tradition of bringing people together through song.

The visit offered the Singaporean delegation an opportunity to discover Cebuโ€™s guitar-making tradition and appreciate the craftsmanship behind one of the Philippinesโ€™ most recognizable musical instruments. Inside the shop, guitars and other musical instruments provided a glimpse into the artistry, patience, and technical skill involved in producing instruments that have accompanied generations of Filipino musicians and families.

Beyond viewing the instruments, the delegation experienced how music can turn an ordinary visit into an opportunity for genuine connection. The gathering developed into a shared singing session, with the Singaporean visitors joining the people at the shop in a spontaneous moment of music and fellowship. The atmosphere offered a different kind of engagement from the organized humanitarian activities that had brought the delegation to Cebu, allowing relationships to grow through participation, conversation, and a shared appreciation for music.

The experience highlighted a familiar part of Filipino culture: music is often a way of welcoming guests and making people feel included. Whether during celebrations, family gatherings, or informal encounters, singing creates opportunities for people to participate regardless of where they come from. For the visiting delegation, joining the singing was an opportunity to experience this tradition firsthandโ€”not simply as observers of Filipino culture, but as participants in a shared moment with their local hosts.

The guitar shop also brought attention to Cebuโ€™s tradition of instrument-making, particularly in the provinceโ€™s established guitar-making communities. Behind each instrument is a combination of craftsmanship, practical knowledge, and cultural tradition that continues to give local products their distinct character. By encountering these instruments and the people who appreciate them, the delegation gained a more personal understanding of how cultural heritage is preserved through skills and practices that remain part of everyday community life.

The visit added a cultural dimension to the delegationโ€™s continuing engagement with the Philippines. The October 9 humanitarian outreach, conducted under the theme โ€œNourish Today, Empower Tomorrow,โ€ brought together HCCCI, Lions Club of Singapore Paterson, and other institutional, corporate, civic, and government partners to support families and healthcare facilities. The subsequent cultural experience showed another way international partnerships can connect people: by creating opportunities to appreciate local traditions, share experiences, and build relationships beyond the immediate objectives of an outreach activity.

Together, these experiences reflect the breadth of the HCCCIโ€“Lions Club of Singapore Paterson partnership. Humanitarian initiatives respond to practical needs, while cultural encounters help visiting partners understand the communities with which they engage. Both contribute to a relationship grounded in service, cooperation, and mutual appreciation.

The visit aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, through the appreciation of local cultural heritage and traditional craftsmanship, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through the people-to-people connections fostered by the continuing partnership between HCCCI and Lions Club of Singapore Paterson.

For HCCCI, hosting and engaging with international partners means more than facilitating humanitarian initiatives. It also means creating opportunities for visitors to encounter the Philippines through its communities, traditions, creativity, and hospitality. The guitar-shop visit demonstrated how these experiences can complement service-oriented activities by allowing partners to connect with the cultural identity of the places they visit.

As the delegationโ€™s Philippine engagement continued, the experience in Cebu offered a memorable complement to the humanitarian work undertaken earlier in the visit. From helping mobilize resources for families and hospitals to sharing songs in a local guitar shop, the partnership brought together two important dimensions of international engagement: service to communities and connection between people. In Cebu, a guitar and a shared song became another expression of the friendship and cooperation that HCCCI and Lions Club of Singapore Paterson continue to build.
