Holy Child Central Colleges, Inc., through its College of Criminal Justice Education, conducted a Water Survival and First Aid Training as part of the DEFTAC 3 subject for Criminology students. The activity was participated in by second year Criminology students, faculty members, and institutional partners, and was carried out as an onsite experiential learning activity. It was held on December 5, 2025, in partnership with the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office of Surallah, South Cotabato, at a designated water safety training area within the municipality.

The activity focused on strengthening students’ competencies in water survival techniques, rescue awareness, and basic first aid. Through guided demonstrations and supervised drills, participants were immersed in realistic emergency scenarios that required alertness, discipline, and sound decision making. Emphasis was placed on safety protocols and proper response strategies applicable to water related incidents.

The training was facilitated by Rodney Cañete Sumugat, RCrim, subject teacher for DEFTAC 3, with the support of Ma’am Rocelyn Mabolo, RCrim, and the Program Head of the College of Criminal Justice Education, Rev. Patrick O. Jugos, RCrim, MSCJ. Personnel from MDRRMO Surallah provided technical expertise and safety supervision, ensuring that the activity adhered to established emergency and rescue standards.

The program centered on preparing Criminology students for situations where immediate action and presence of mind are essential. It highlighted the responsibility of future criminal justice professionals to safeguard lives, particularly in water related emergencies. Through this activity, HCCCI reinforced its commitment to holistic education that integrates academic learning with practical service.

This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 3 Good Health and Well Being by promoting accident prevention, safety awareness, and lifesaving skills. It also supports Sustainable Development Goal 4 Quality Education through experiential learning that enhances practical competencies and lifelong skills. In addition, the activity contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities by strengthening disaster preparedness, and Sustainable Development Goal 17 Partnerships for the Goals by fostering collaboration between the academic institution and government agencies.

The knowledge and skills gained during the training extend beyond the activity itself. Students carry forward these competencies as they engage with families, peers, and the communities they will eventually serve. In doing so, they help create safer environments and strengthen collective readiness during emergencies across different settings.

Participants expressed a renewed sense of confidence and responsibility after completing the activity. Faculty members shared fulfillment in witnessing students translate theory into practice, while students acknowledged the importance of preparedness when responding to situations where lives may be at risk. The experience deepened their appreciation for service and vigilance.

Moving forward, Holy Child Central Colleges, Inc. continues to prioritize the provision of meaningful learning opportunities aligned with its core values of Spiritual Growth, Teamwork and Creativity, Accountability and Discipline, Integrity and Trust, Reliability, and Serviceability and Social Responsibility. These values guide the institution in forming individuals who are competent, principled, and committed to serving others.

Through activities such as this, the HCCCI community stands as dedicated advocates of safety, preparedness, and compassion. Beyond academic achievement, they emerge as empowered stewards of care and responsibility, reflecting the institution’s enduring mission to educate with purpose and serve with integrity.
