Holy Child Central Colleges, Inc. (HCCCI) brought international learning beyond its campus and into the community of Lake Sebu, South Cotabato, giving 60 participants at Sta. Cruz Mission School, Inc. the opportunity to learn directly from Malaysian visiting professors through a cultural lecture on โDoโs and Donโts in Malaysian Culture.โ
The engagement forms part of HCCCIโs CommuNEKTA initiative, which connects the institutionโs academic resources, international partnerships, expertise, and learning opportunities with communities and partner institutions. Through the initiative, HCCCI seeks to make education and internationalization more accessibleโnot only within its campuses, but also in communities and areas that may be farther from conventional centers of higher education.
The session was facilitated by Ts. Suhaili Binti Din and Ms. Samratul Janin Binti Sidal of the Malaysian Institute of Information Technology (MIIT), Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL), who were engaged as visiting professors of HCCCI. Their presence brought firsthand Malaysian perspectives to Lake Sebu, allowing participants to learn directly from educators with experience in another cultural and educational context.
The discussion introduced participants to Malaysian customs, social etiquette, communication practices, respectful conduct, and cultural considerations when interacting with people from different backgrounds. More than learning a list of cultural โdoโs and donโts,โ participants were encouraged to understand the reasons behind cultural practices and how differences in social expectations can shape communication and everyday interactions.
The international lecture also demonstrated how internationalization can take place beyond traditional academic spaces. Rather than requiring participants to travel to HCCCIโs campusโor overseasโto experience an international learning opportunity, HCCCI brought the international educators directly to the community.
This approach reflects the broader purpose of CommuNEKTA: to connect the knowledge, people, partnerships, and resources of HCCCI with communities that can benefit from them. Internationalization becomes part of community engagement when global perspectives are brought closer to learners, educators, and community members regardless of where they are located.
Located within a culturally diverse community, Lake Sebu provided a particularly relevant setting for the discussion. The exchange encouraged participants to appreciate both the richness of their own cultural identities and the diversity of practices found in other societies. Learning about Malaysian culture became an avenue for reflecting on how culture influences communication, relationships, and mutual understanding.
The presence of the visiting professors also made the experience more personal and interactive. Participants were able to ask questions, engage directly with international educators, and gain perspectives grounded in actual cultural and educational experiences. This direct interaction transformed the activity from a conventional lecture into a shared intercultural learning experience.
The engagement further strengthened HCCCIโs relationship with Sta. Cruz Mission School, Inc., demonstrating how partnerships can extend beyond formal institutional connections and become platforms for shared learning. It also illustrated how HCCCIโs international partnerships with institutions such as MIIT and UniKL can generate value beyond the Collegeโs immediate academic community.
The initiative supports Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education by extending access to relevant learning opportunities and international perspectives. It contributes to SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities by bringing an international learning experience closer to participants who may not otherwise have direct access to such opportunities. The activity also advances SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities by strengthening community-based learning and cultural understanding, while SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals is reflected in the collaboration among HCCCI, MIIT, UniKL, and Sta. Cruz Mission School, Inc.
For the 30 participants, the session offered more than an introduction to Malaysian culture. It created an opportunity to encounter another society directly, develop intercultural awareness, ask questions, and understand how cultural knowledge can shape communication and relationships.
For HCCCI, the engagement reinforces a broader understanding of internationalization: global learning should not be confined to those who can travel. It can be brought closer to communities through partnerships, visiting professors, shared expertise, and purposeful outreach.
Through CommuNEKTA, visiting professor engagements, and its growing network of international and community partners, HCCCI continues to connect the global with the localโbringing international knowledge and cultural perspectives from partner institutions to communities across South Cotabato, including areas beyond its immediate campus reach.
The Lake Sebu engagement demonstrates how internationalization can become a form of community service: bringing the world closer to communities, creating spaces for intercultural learning, and ensuring that the benefits of HCCCIโs international connections can reach beyond the institution itself.
