The 2026 International Conference on Nature Studies and Innovation for the Environment (ICoNSIE) was conducted in person from May 11 to 16, 2026 at the University of the Philippines Cebu along Gorordo Avenue, Cebu City, Philippines. The event gathered researchers, educators, policymakers, environmental advocates, and representatives from various institutions who participated in academic exchanges, research presentations, and collaborative discussions focused on advancing environmental sustainability and climate action. Holy Child Central Colleges, Inc. actively participated in the conference through its Research and Extension Director, Marlon L. Viejo, who served as one of the paper presenters.
Anchored on the theme โNavigating the Path Towards Net Zero Carbon Emission by 2050,โ the conference served as a platform for the dissemination of research outputs, innovative approaches, and policy recommendations addressing climate change mitigation and sustainable development. It emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in generating science-based solutions that support the transition toward a carbon-neutral and climate-resilient future.
The conference featured distinguished participants from various academic and professional institutions, including members and officials of the Philippine Society for the Study of Nature, keynote speakers, plenary resource persons, panel discussants, and research presenters. Representing Holy Child Central Colleges, Inc. was Research and Extension Director Marlon L. Viejo, who delivered an oral presentation during the conference sessions.
The research director presented the paper entitled โPopulation and Air Quality in Region XII (SOCCSKSARGEN),โ which was accepted for oral presentation under the subtheme Sustainable Development Goals and Decarbonization. The review committee recommended refining the study to align more closely with sustainable cities, particularly highlighting implications for net zero emission policy at the city level. His presentation, allotted 10 to 15 minutes, examined the relationship between population dynamics and air quality and its relevance to urban environmental planning and sustainability.
ICoNSIE 2026 strongly aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 15 (Life on Land), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Through its research presentations, interdisciplinary collaboration, and policy-oriented discussions, the conference promotes collective action, sustainable innovation, environmental stewardship, and stronger institutional partnerships toward achieving climate and sustainability goals.
Beyond academic engagement, the conference contributes to broader societal development by strengthening environmental awareness and encouraging evidence-based decision-making in governance and planning. It fosters a culture of sustainability that supports improved environmental quality, responsible resource use, and long-term resilience across various sectors.
Participants expressed that the conference provided a valuable platform for intellectual exchange and professional growth, allowing them to engage with experts and refine their research perspectives. Viejoโs participation highlighted Holy Child Central Colleges, Inc.โs commitment to research excellence and its active role in addressing pressing environmental challenges.
ICoNSIE 2026 underscores the continuing commitment of the Philippine Society for the Study of Nature and partner institutions, including Holy Child Central Colleges, Inc., in advancing environmental research and innovation. It stands as a strong testament to their role as drivers of change in promoting sustainable, resilient, and climate-responsive communities.
